zune account sign-in problems

If you can’t sign in from the Zune Music + Video software but you can sign in from the Zune website, check these settings on your computer.

Check your Windows firewall settings and disable any third-party software

Try changing your Windows firewall settings if you can't sign in from the Zune Music + Video software.

In Windows XP

  1. Click Start, click Run, type firewall.cpl, and then click OK.

  2. Click the Exceptions tab.

  3. Click Add Program.

  4. Click Browse. Locate and select Zune.exe, and then click Open. Note: By default, the Zune Music + Video software is installed in this location: C:\Program Files\Zune.

  5. Click OK two times.

In Windows Vista

  1. Click Start, type firewall.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.

  2. Click Allow a program through Windows Firewall. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

  3. Click Add program.

  4. Click Browse.

  5. Locate the Zune Music + Video software, and then click Open. Note: By default, Zune.exe is installed in this location: C:\Program Files\Zune.

  6. Click OK two times.

In Windows 7

  1. Click Start, type firewall.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.

  2. Click Allow a program through Windows Firewall.

  3. If you are not an administrator, click the Change Settings button and enter your administrator password when prompted.

  4. Click Allow another program.

  5. Click Browse. Locate Zune, and then click Open.  (By default, Zune is installed in the following location: C:\Program Files\Zune)

  6. Select Zune in the program list and then click Add.

  7. Click OK.

Microsoft Security Essentials

  1. Start Microsoft Security Essentials.

  2. Click Change Microsoft Security Essentials settings.

  3. Click the Firewall tab.

  4. Click Advanced Settings. Scroll through the list of programs to see if Zune.exe appears in the list.

    • If Zune is listed, make sure that the firewall setting for Zune.exe is set to Allow and not to Block.

    • If Zune isn't listed, Click Add. Locate Zune, and then click Open. (By default, Zune.exe is installed in the following location: C:\Program Files\Zune)

  5. Click OK two times.

If you're still having trouble, third-party software on your computer may be blocking your access to Zune Music + Video.

  1. Disable any third-party software that always runs when you have an Internet connection: for example: pop-up blockers, antivirus programs, firewalls, and Internet security programs. If you don’t know how to do this, look in the program's Help system for steps that you can use.

  2. Restart your computer.

  3. Try signing in again.  If you still can't sign in, try checking your date and time settings.

Make sure the date and time settings on your computer are correct

In Windows XP

  1. Click Start, click Run, type timedate.cpl, and then click OK.

  2. On the Date & Time tab, make sure that you have the correct date and time.

  3. Make any necessary changes, and then click OK.

In Windows 7 and Windows Vista

  1. Click Start, type timedate.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.

  2. On the Date & Time tab, make sure that you see the correct date and time.

  3. To make any necessary changes, click Change date and time, or click Change Time Zone.Note A User Account Control window may appear. If this occurs, click Continue. To change the date and time settings, you may have to have the administrator password.

  4. If you make any adjustments, click OK to close the Date and Time Settings window or the Time Zone Settings window.

  5. Click OK to close the Date and Time window.

  6. Now try signing in again. If you still can’t sign in, try the next step.

Confirm that your computer’s regional settings match your Zune Music + Video account

  1. Sign in to Zune.net from the website.

  2. Go to Billing Information.

  3. Click Personal Information. Check what is listed under Country/Region.

  4. Now check the setting on your computer.

  5. In Windows 7 or Windows Vista, open the Control Panel.

  6. Click Region and Language and check the Location that is listed on your computer.  If the country and region listed for your Zune Music + Video account doesn't match the one listed for your computer, correct it, and try signing in again.
