sync groups

When you configure the sync settings in the Zune software to let you choose what syncs, each item you drag to your Zune becomes a sync group.

A sync group can be as broad as an artist, album, friend, picture folder, or podcast series—or as narrow as an individual song or video. The Zune software makes sure that the content for all sync groups, whether new or just newly rated, is up to date on your Zune player:

  • Add a new album by a favorite artist and onto your Zune it goes.
  • When your friends choose new favorites, their Zune Cards will reflect it—both in the Zune Social and, thanks to your sync groups, on your Zune player.

To see your sync groups

  1. In Zune software, click Settings, then Device.
  2. Select Sync groups.

You can also set your sync options to use Smart sync, so that any changes you make to your media will automatically update in both your collection and on your player. That way you'll always have the stuff you want, when you want it.

Bits and pieces still add up

Even when you use sync groups to limit the stuff you sync with your Zune, it's still possible to choose more content than will fit. If this happens, you're given the option to selectively remove sync groups to make sure you can sync the things you want the most.

You can review and edit your sync groups in the Zune software's Device Settings whenever your Zune is connected.

Note
Your friends are also sync groups. If you have a Zune Pass subscription, the music for each friend's playlists can use up to 100 MB.

Sync groups do not apply when your Zune is connected as a guest.
