Sync your Zune to another computer

When you connect your Zune to your computer for the first time, you're linking your device to the Zune software on that computer. That computer will remember your Zune and all of its settings and history.

What if you want to connect to a different computer, say, at work? You can do that, too. As long as you have the Zune software installed, you can connect to another computer as a "guest" and sync items to and from your Zune—that is, to your Zune from the computer and from the computer to your Zune.

The first time you connect your Zune to another computer, select Always connect to this device as a guest. That computer will recognize your Zune as a guest from that point on. It will not, however, record your sync history, update your song info or album art, or provide a lot of the other perks that you get on your primary computer.

If you ever want to end the guest relationship on the new computer, click Forget This Device the next time you connect your Zune.

Some tips about connecting your Zune as a guest:

  • When you connect your Zune to a new computer, all the media on your device is considered guest content by the Zune software and appears as "Inbox and Guest Content."
  • If you reverse sync media from your Zune to a new computer, those items are added to the Zune software collection and treated like any other content on that computer.
  • If you decide to link your device to a new computer and then sync the usual way— from your collection to your Zune—the Zune software recognizes duplicate content (items on your computer and your device) and updates your collection accordingly. This holds true if you buy a new computer and transfer your collection from the old computer to the new one.
  • Items you sync to your Zune as a guest remain on your Zune unless you manually delete them.
