Using Your Zune Pass

What's a Zune Pass?

A Zune Pass is a subscription that lets you download as many songs as you like from Zune Marketplace and listen to them for as long as you hold your subscription.

Songs you download with a Zune Pass can be synced with up to three Zune players, but they can't be burned to CD. To get burn rights for a song, buy the song using either Microsoft Points or song credits. Zune Pass subscriptions come with 10 song credits per month.

What are the benefits of a Zune Pass?

As long as your Zune Pass subscription is valid, you can:

  • Download an unlimited number of songs on up to three computers.
  • Play the songs an unlimited number of times.
  • Sync the downloaded songs an unlimited number of times with up to three Zune players.
  • Keep 10 songs every month for your permanent collection.

Songs that you download with your Zune Pass can't be burned to a CD unless you've bought them with your song credits. If you choose not to renew your Zune Pass after the subscription period ends, you won't be able to play the songs you've downloaded, though they will still appear in your Zune collection. Songs acquired using song credits are an exception: you can enjoy them indefinitely, even if your subscription lapses.

What are the benefits of song credits?

Songs bought with song credits become part of your permanent collection. Here's what you can do with songs you buy from Zune Marketplace:

  • Play the song an unlimited number of times.
  • Sync the song an unlimited number of times with an unlimited number of Zune players.
  • Burn the song to CD up to seven times.
  • Continue to play the song after your Zune Pass subscription has expired.

Yes.

What is auto-renewal?

Your Zune Pass is automatically renewed through your credit card so that you can continue to enjoy the benefits of the Zune Pass without interruption. You can choose to have your credit card charged monthly or quarterly (every three months).

Do I have to enroll for auto-renewal of my Zune Pass?

Yes.

To cancel your account prior to auto-renewal, sign in at Zune.net and go to My Account. In the section for Zune Pass and Microsoft Points, click Zune Pass. Select Cancel and click Next. Your Zune Pass media rights will remain active only until the end of your current billing cycle.

On what day of the month does my Zune Pass automatically renew?

The date of the month of the original transaction is your renewal date. For example, if you bought your Zune Pass on the fifteenth of the month, you'll be automatically billed every subsequent month on the fifteenth.

I signed up for a 14-day free trial Zune Pass. Do I still get 10 song credits?

No. Song credits are given at the start of your paid Zune Pass subscription and at the beginning of each billing period thereafter. Whether you sign up for a paid Zune Pass at the beginning or the end of your 14-day free trial, you won't be billed until your free trial has ended. When billing begins, so do your song credits.

When do this month's song credits expire?

Unused song credits issued as part of your Zune Pass expire at the end of the day before the renewal date for your account.

To check your renewal date:

  1. Sign in at Zune.net, then click My Account.
  2. In Account Information, click Billing Information, then sign in with the same e-mail address and password when you arrive at Microsoft Billing.
  3. On your billing account overview, under Your Payment Methods, select the Account ID for your Zune Pass on the dropdown menu.
If there's more than one account, you'll know it's the right one when you see your Zune Pass listed below in Your Services.
  4. Click the designated payment type for this account.
  5. On the payment account activity page, check the day of the month for the most recent transaction. That's your renewal date.
Whether you have a one- or three-month subscription, unused Zune Pass song credits expire the day before that date on each month.

Do unused song credits carry forward to the next month?

No. But for as long as your subscription is active, the moment any unused song credits expire, you'll automatically have 10 fresh credits ready to go!

Does it cost extra to put Zune Pass music on a second Zune?

Not at all! You can listen to your Zune Pass music on up to three Zune players.

Can I listen to Zune Pass music on more than one computer?

Sure. You can listen to music downloaded from your Zune Pass account on up to three computers, and you can swap out one computer every 30 days. To review your computers and players, go to your Zune software's Account Settings and click Computers and Devices.

Is the music that I download from Zune Marketplace protected?

Music that you purchase in the MP3 format using either song credits or Microsoft Points has no associated media usage rights—you can back it up, listen to it on other computers and Zune players, and burn it to your own CDs, for your personal, non-commercial use. Other music that you download from Zune Marketplace using a Zune Pass is protected with media usage rights, which specify what you can do with the songs. For more information, see Media Usage Rights FAQ.

How can I cancel my Zune Pass?

See How to cancel a Zune Pass subscription.

If I cancel my Zune Pass, can I still listen to the music I've downloaded?

Music you buy using the song credits included with your Zune Pass is yours to keep. Your Zune Pass must be kept current, however, to continue to play the music downloaded as part of your subscription. Zune Pass downloads automatically expire if you don't renew your Zune Pass.
