manage playlists and autoplaylists

A playlist is any combination of one or more songs or other audio files. It's the best way to organize the music you listen to.

Make a playlist to accompany an event, like a party or a study session, or to set the right mood.

Creating a playlist is a simple drag-and-drop or using Smart DJ to create one for you. Playlists can include any combination of songs, albums, or artists.

You can also create an autoplaylist that includes music according to parameters you define. When you add music to your collection that meets those parameters, it's automatically added to the matching autoplaylist, plus you can set it to update automatically. It's like having your own DJ.

For step-by-step instructions on how to create a playlist, see Make Playlists.

You can also send playlists to your friends. Here's how.

You can't put videos, photos, or podcasts in a Zune playlist.

Playlist tips

Keep these tips in mind when working with playlists:

  • Dragging a CD to the playlist icon will add all its tracks to the playlist.
  • Dragging an artist to the playlist icon will add all music by that artist.
  • A playlist can hold up to 2,000 songs. If you put in more than that, it won't sync to your Zune.
  • If you remove a song from a playlist, the Zune software removes that item from your Zune the next time you sync—keeping your playlist changes intact.
  • The Zune playlists will point to the music at Zune Marketplace, so if you delete the music from your collection and your player, the playlist can still download your selections from the Marketplace.

Reverse sync a playlist

If you have a playlist that's on your Zune but not yet on your PC and you'd like to add it, you can reverse-sync the playlist onto your computer by following these instructions:

  1. Connect your Zune to your computer.
  2. In the Zune software, go to Device, Music, Playlist View.
  3. Select the playlists that you want on your computer.
  4. Drag the playlists to the computer icon in the lower-left corner.

Adding playlists from other media players

Zune will work with playlists in two formats: ZPL (.zpl) and M3U (.m3U). ZPL is the Zune playlist format.

M3U is the playlist format used by many media programs. If a playlist is in this format, simply drag it into your Zune collection.

Listening to playlists on your Zune

Once you’ve synced your playlists to your Zune, it’s easy to find one and play it. See Play Music.

If you take a break from your music, your Zune remembers your place in a playlist as long as you use it again within 24 hours. After 24 hours, you'll have to find that sweet spot in the playlist yourself.

Marketplace playlists

Zune Marketplace playlists are an excellent way to discover new music. Hundreds of new hand-picked and professionally curated playlists from Marketplace editors and special guests are available weekly.

Drag Marketplace playlists into the Zune software playlist to preview 30-second samples. If you have a Zune Pass, just add whatever you like to your collection.
