What can I put in a playlist?
Any audio file—a song track, an album, an artist—anything in your Zune software music collection can be added to a playlist.
Can I create autoplaylists?
Yes, the Zune software lets you create autoplaylists based on artist, genre, your rating, even how often you've played the file.
Where are my playlist files stored on my computer?
By default, playlists are saved in the Playlists folder, which is located in the same folder that you rip your CDs to (usually, the My Music\Zune folder).
What's the Zune playlist file name extension?
The file name extension for Zune playlists is .zpl.
When I burn or sync a playlist, does the list itself get burned or synced?
When you burn a CD, the songs in the playlist are burned to the CD but the playlist file is not. When you sync a playlist with your Zune, both the playlist file and the songs in the playlist are synced.
Can I make a playlist of podcasts and sync it with my Zune?
No, podcasts can't go in a playlist.
Can I make a playlist of videos and sync it with my Zune?
No, videos can't go in a playlist.
How can I put a playlist on my Zune?
To add a playlist to your Zune, drag the playlist to the player icon. If you add new items or make changes to the playlist, the playlist is updated on your Zune during the next sync. For more, see Sync Options.
Is there an item limit for playlists?
Yes, the maximum number of items is 2,000. A playlist that has more than 2,000 items won't sync with your Zune.
How do I add a song downloaded from Zune Marketplace to a playlist?
Drag it to the playlist icon [ ]. To learn how to create or edit a playlist, see Make Playlists.
If the new song meets the parameters of an autoplaylist, Zune automatically adds it to the matching autoplaylist.
When I delete a playlist, does it delete the songs from my collection?
No, when you delete a playlist, the songs that were in the playlist remain in your collection.
Can I put a song that's playing into a playlist?
Yes, you can drag any song to a playlist—even if it's playing.
Can I make the quick list on my Zune into a playlist?
No, quick lists can't be synced or saved as a regular playlist.
How can I retrieve the preloaded playlist that came with my Zune?
You can retrieve the Zune Gems playlist—the preloaded songs that came with your Zune—if you accidentally deleted it. Go to Zune Marketplace to download Zune Gems to your collection. Then sync and it's all yours again.

Mixtapes are compilations of music from different artists around a common genre or theme—like a road trip collection, a party mix, or award winners. You can download the songs individually or as a complete compilation. Mixtapes are compiled by the Zune Music Team, and can be found be going to Marketplace, then Music, then Mixtapes (under "Categories").
