| | Smart DJ is a quick and dynamic way to launch instant mixes in the Zune software based on any album, artist, or song in your collection, and to create automatic playlists for saving and syncing to your Zune player. Using the criteria you provide, Smart DJ will select similar songs from your collection and suggest songs from Zune's music catalog. In addition, if you are a Zune Pass holder you can listen to complete songs from the Zune catalog in your Smart DJ mixes, and even create playlists and mixes based entirely on music from the catalog, making Smart DJ a great way to discover new music.
- To launch a Smart DJ mix from any artist in your collection for instant listening:
- Go to Quickplay in the Zune software and click on any tile that says Smart DJ Playlist. Enter the name of any artist in your collection and click the Play icon.
- You can also right-click on any song, album, or artist in your collection and select Play Smart DJ mix.
- If you're a Zune Pass holder you can also choose from artists in the Zune catalog that are not in your collection. Navigate to an artist's page at Zune Marketplace and click the Smart DJ command to launch a mix.
When playing, Smart DJ mixes are displayed in the Now Playing screen. To get to the Now Playing screen click the Now Playing icon in the lower right. Once a Smart DJ mix starts playing, it will continue to play for as long as Smart DJ can find similar songs.
There are three different ways that you can create a Smart DJ playlist. Create a Smart DJ playlist from your collection - Right-click on any song, artist, or album in your collection.
- Select Create Smart DJ Playlist from the context menu.
- Name your playlist and select Ok.

- Sync a Smart DJ playlist to your Zune by going toCollection, Playlists, and dragging the Smart DJ playlist to the player icon.
Smart DJ and other autoplaylists feature dynamic properties that you can use to customize your selections and how often they refresh. - Automatic refresh: set your Smart DJ playlist to auto refresh so that a new set of songs will generate automatically. If the playlist has an Items I choose relationship with your Zune player, then the Smart DJ playlist will automatically update on your Zune the next time it syncs to your collection.
- Playlist duration: set Smart DJ to play for a certain amount of time, or to include a specific number of songs. Your playlist can have up to 100 songs, or be up to 500 minutes long.
- Mix playlist contents: Choose if your playlist will contain music from your collection, the Zune Marketplace catalog, or both. If you're a Zune Pass holder you can have Smart DJ add songs from the Zune music catalog to the playlist, or even make a playlist based entirely on Zune catalog songs not yet in your collection—a great way to discover new music.
Set your Smart DJ and Autoplaylist properties - In the Zune software, navigate to Collection, Playlists.
- Click once on the Smart DJ or Autoplaylist of your choice to highlight it.
- Select Edit Playlist in the lower right corner.
Once you apply your settings and click Ok, Zune will automatically refresh the songs in that list. Note When you're in Quickplay and select Mini Mode, the lists you'll see are the Smart DJ playlists that you've pinned to Quickplay—not the Smart DJ playlists that you have saved in your Playlists area. |
