about wireless syncing

To wirelessly sync your digital media from your collection to your Windows Phone, you have to set it up first. To set up wireless sync, connect your phone to your computer with a sync cable. Once you set it up, your phone will automatically sync new content whenever it's docked or connected to a power outlet and in range of your wireless network. Your wireless network must be up and running and you have to be logged in to your computer so that the Zune software can launch.

This article contains the following sections:

There are two possible wireless network setup configurations:

  • If your computer operating system is Windows or Windows Vista and your computer is wirelessly connected to your network, your phone will automatically locate your wireless network and transfer the network name (SSID) and network key.

  • If your computer operating system is not Windows or Windows Vista, and your computer is connected to the network by an Ethernet cable, your phone can scan for available wireless networks. Select the one your computer is connected to and enter the network key.

  • Note

During wireless sync setup, the Zune software opens ports 1900 and 2869 on your computer.

To confirm that ports 1900 and 2869 are open in Windows 7 or Windows Vista

  1. Click Start.

  2. In the search box, type Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.

  3. Open the firewall program, and in the left column, click Inbound Rules.

In the center pane, scroll down to the Zune Wireless Sync entries, and in the Enabled column, select Yes for ports 1900 and 2869.

Zune supports wireless local area networks (LANs) that conform to 802.11b or 802.11g, two general-purpose wireless standards.

When setting up wireless sync, you must apply the same authentication/encryption scheme to your phone that's being used on your wireless network. Zune works with the following authentication schemes:

  • Open network with no encryption

  • WEP (64-bit or 128-bit key) encryption

  • WPA-PSK (TKIP)

  • WPA-PSK (AES)

  • WPA2-PSK (AES)

  • WPA2-PSK (TKIP)

To wirelessly sync your phone, you'll need:

  • An 802.11b or 802.11g wireless network

  • A supported network authentication scheme

  • The network name (SSID) of the wireless network

  • The network key (also known as a passphrase) for the wireless network

When you set up wireless sync, the Zune software searches your computer for a wireless profile. Zune will automatically locate the network name and network key used by your computer to connect to the network if:

  • You're using Windows 7 or Windows Vista.

  • Your computer is wirelessly connected to the network.

To enable a Windows Phone for wireless sync

  1. Make sure your phone is set up for and connected to your wireless network.

  2. Connect your phone to your computer.

  3. Sign in to the Zune software and click Settings, Phone, Wireless Sync.

  4. Click Set Up Wireless Sync.

  5. After Zune verifies your phone is connected to your wireless network, click Next, then click Done.

Once you've configured your phone to sync wirelessly, dock your phone or plug it into a power outlet. After ten minutes, your phone will begin syncing with your computer. It will remain wirelessly linked with your computer and sync any new content in your collection until you undock or unplug your phone, or until you press Cancel.

To automatically sync media to your phone, the following conditions have to be met:

  • Your wi-fi network must be on.

  • You must be logged in to your Windows user account on the computer where the Zune software is installed. (The computer can be locked, but you must be logged in.) The computer also needs to be on the same network as your phone.
